Today it's a drive to the West. Out to Graniteville. Home of (Rock of Ages, Granite). We toured the Barre Mine and the cutting plant, and found out how they cut this amazingly hard rock and move it into the plant. The etching and cutting is an amazing process. Artisans and craftsmen creat almost anything you want out of solid granite. Now it's up the road to Cabot for a tour of the (Cabot Cheese Factory). Excellent cheese and we found out that cheddar cheese is totally lactose free and White. The orange color comes from artificial means and is most popular in the Mid West and West. After that we drive on to St. Johnsbury and a ( Maple Sugar Plant). We learned the in's and out's of making maple syrup. Such as, it takes 31 gal. of sap to make 1 gal. of maple syrup. We take so much for granted. Finding out how these things actually come into being is very interesting. Gary and Myron have been alternating driving/navigating so its not so hard on anyone. Today it was clear and 80degrees.

5 Sept. Fri. day 96
Today is a down day getting ready to leave tomorrow. We do some shopping, repairs and clean up. Lots of pitch and pine needles on the awnings. Sorry to leave this place, it was nice to have an extended time here and use it as home base. It was confortable to come back after a long day and relax.

6 Sept. Sat. day97
Today we left the camp in Twin Mountain at 8:30am. Approx. 1:00 to Wellsriver to fill up with fuel, $4.25 a gal. and enjoyed a Truckers breakfast. Homemade breads, and lots of food. It was overcast this morning with a low of 60 degrees, as we're driving to Conneticut we encounter showers but nothing serious. The high for the day ends up close to 90 degrees, humidity about 80%. Thank goodness for air conditioning. We check into the campground in East Hampton about 3:30, enjoy a free supper of Tacos with other guests at 5:30. At about 6:30 the heavens open up and it is a downpour. The tail end and of one of the hurricane's of the season is now overhead. We get 6 to 8 inches of rain tonight and 40 mph winds. Two counties away there are Tornado warnings out until 8:30 pm Thank goodness now it's 8:45 and they are dropping the warnings.

1 Sept. Mon. day 92
We head south and East to Attitash a ski area. Since it's summer and no snow, we take the ski lift up and then come down a 1 mile twisted track on a Luge type sled. FUN RIDE-- this area would also be fun for skiing. We stopped in Conway for lunch, then we head back via another route. Along this route again we follow a river which has a HUGE swimming area at a falls. Big Rocks and pools, rapids and a large picnic area. MANY people playing in the water. Even tho the water had to be 56 degrees. Another Beautiful area.
Up the road about 5 miles we hike off the road about 1/2 mi. to view a stream and waterful, which was amazing. We can understand why this is such a popular area for locals and tourists.

2 Sept. tues. day 93
Today is an off day........the mail finally catches up with us, so it's 3 weeks of mail and Laundry and just catching up. HAPPY HOUR and some steaks for dinner. Very much needed down time.

3 Sept. wed. day 94
It's off again to Mt. Washington and the COG RAILWAY. In the late 1800's a local man climbed Mt. Washington (6200 ft.) and then decided everyone should be able to enjoy the view. On a crystal clear day you should be able to see 4 states and the Atlantic Ocean.
So he convinced the legislature that he should be allowed to build a Railroad. That was the easy part. The mountain rises at the rate of 37 degrees at some points. That is 14 inches up for each 36 inches forward. This is too steep for most anything to climb. Sylvester Marsh designes and builds a steam Engine that climbs with a COG WHEEL rather than a smooth wheel. It proved very efficient to the point tha they still run the train today on coal fired steam. WHAT A KICK. The Engine burns 2000 lbs. of coal and uses 1000 gal. of water for one accent. The worst weather on the East coast appears at the top of Mt. Washington. The highest wind ever recorded by man, 231 mph, in April 1934

We found the "OLD" Taffy making machine on Short Beach (still there after all this time) and other old memories.
Tonight 6 of us went to the Arundel Barn Playhouse. We experienced the production of "Always Patsy Cline"

29 Aug Fri. day 89
We left Kennebunkport at 9am and took the back roads over to Rochester, New Hampshire. Lots of trees and rolling hills. A Northwest heading takes us up the south shore of Lake Winnipesaukee. Beautiful lake about 20mi. long and about 8mi. wide.
Stopped in Weirs Beach, made a lunch and sat in a local park next to the water. Beautiful setting. We arrived Twin Mountain about 2:30 , the last hour and a half from the lake are through New Hampshire's BIG Mountains. 6500 ft.

30 Aug Sat. day 90
We drove into Littleton with a loop around and through the hills. Bethleham, then Franconia. Discovered a 1850's Blast furnace along the way. In Littleton we toured a Grist Mill, that was started in 1797. The buildings and equipment fell into disrepair and were almost torn down in the 1990's. A family decided that this can't happen so in 1997 restoration started. It's still rough, but it is a working mill now. 200 yr. old building and equipment still working ----------IMPRESSIVE.

Back into town this morning, jumped on a TROLLY TOUR. Seeing the sights with someone that knows the area & History is always a plus. Had dinner at McSeaGulls. Gary and Myron had AWSOME PRIME RIB, Barbara & Gayla had wonderful Seafood.

24 Aug Sun. day 84
Drive into Bath, Maine. Took another Trolly Tour ( they are fun and informative) Open air.
Saw one street that had about 8 SEARS CATALOG HOMES. iN THE 30'S & 40"S you could order a house from Sears. They would send out a section, then after you completed that kit, they would send out the next. Then would keep doing this until the house was finished. Nice looking houses, but all alike. The Movie (Message in a Bottle) starts with 2 scenes shot here in Bath. One on the porch where she is eating breakfast and the other is the street where the star went jogging. This evening we watched the movie in The Pisel Coach. The town once had a population of about 40,000 people, most were employed by the shipyard. Now there is only about 9600 people in town.

Also, if anyone would like to comment (good or bad) to us, there is a place for you to do that.
This has been lots of fun for us, but mostly it was to let our loved ones know that we are still alive and kicking, and possible where-a-bouts.
We think of you all and wish you could see all of this through our eyes. What a fantastic world we live in.

Bus tour to Louisbourg Fortress National Park. The French settled here in 1713 and built the Fortress over the next 7 years. It’s a major trade center until the British take it in 1745. Our waiter is a “kick” Myron said “Nut Job” After dinner we hold aViking court and some of our members are “Roasted” and found GUILTY…………….Fun night.

1st. Aug. Fri day 61
Load up the group in a tour bus. Frank is our driver, and we are off for Labrador. We drive down to the Ferry Dock and its 1hr. 30 min across to Labrador. On this side of Labrador there is only 60 miles of paved road. We drive to the end which is RED BAY.
A Basque fishing village. They have found a 400 year old galleon on the bottom of the bay. This was a major whaling town at that time. Then we travel on to the Red Bay Light house. Up to the top 126 steps, 6ft. Thick walls at the base and 4ft. Thick walls at the top. It just turned 150 years old. Tonight we stay in the Northern Lights hotel in Labrador.

2 Aug Sat. day 62
We leave the motel at 9:00 am and Frank takes us back to the Ferry. He lives in Labrador and has a vast knowledge of local customs and history. We met his wife and daughters, and they seem to be a very close, secure and happy. On the way back we watch Moose by the road, and arrive at camp at about noon. (Bunny way very happy to see us) This evening Frank comes back with the bus and we go out on a MOOSE hunt. Viewing actually. He gets the bus to within about 20 ft. of a couple of Moose. We see 12 of the big guys in about 1 hour. Temp. here has been in the 60’s with Fog in the A.M. Unfortunately, Moose get hit by cars just like deer.

But fishing has become a pleasure thing rather than a business, as they now grow mussels. We toured the harbor on a boat around the mussel farm. Our tour guide for the day was Reg Hemeon. Great knowledge of local history and the mussel farm, Plus a wonderful story teller. After the boat tour, we had lunch (they call it dinner) at Reg's B&B. We had Seafood Chowder & sandwiches. THEN WE HAD THE CEREMONY. WE WERE INDUCTED INTO THE NEWFOUNDLAND SOCIETY. WE ARE UN-OFFICIAL CITIZENS OF NEWFOUNDLAND. Myron had to stand with one foot on a rock and the other in a tub of Sea water. Then we had an intelligence test, after that the ceremonial toast with SKREECH, which is their local Rum.
Bus ride back to town. We then toured the SeaPlane museum which was right where we were parked. At 6:15pm we walked up the street a few blocks to the BOTWOOD 50 PLUS CLUB. The local Seniors group made us a Buffet Supper, ALL HOMEMADE DISHES. We had MOOSE IN GRAVY, VEGETABLES & FRUIT from the local area. Several of the dishes were specialties of the area.

Lunch at Citidel-Halifax Hotel, then 2 1/2 hours of walking and shopping downtown Halifax. What a beautiful Harbor and very busy downtown area. Could really spend more time here. (Gayla said that) Went through another larger Museum that also had a memorial section dedicated to the Titanic. Lots of information about the pasengers, what classes they were in and how they were treated.. VERY SAD & INTERESTING. On the way back to camp we stopped at the cemetary where many of the Titanic victims were buried and some were acknoledged. Halifax was the closest city to bring them to.
